What is LCA?

The Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) is suited to students who prefer a
practical, hands-on approach to learning and want to develop skills for the workforce
or further vocational training. It is ideal for those who are motivated by continuous
assessment, learn by doing, and want to gain work experience and apply their knowledge
to real-world problems.

For practical learners

  • Hands-on approach: If you learn best by doing, LCA’s focus on practical
tasks and hands-on projects is a good fit.
  • Work experience: The programme includes a day of work experience each
week, which helps with career choice and preparation for adult life.
  • Vocationally focused: It is ideal for students interested in entering
the workforce directly after school or pursuing further vocational training.

For those who prefer continuous assessment

  • Continuous assessment: LCA relies on continuous assessment rather than
a single final exam, which suits students who prefer ongoing evaluation.
  • Credit accumulation: Students earn credits throughout the programme,
with a final grade based on a combination of these credits.

For developing skills

  • Real-world application: The programme encourages students to apply
knowledge and skills to solve real problems in their school, workplace, and community.
  • Skill development: LCA helps students develop practical skills, as
well as personal skills like communication, decision-making, and self-esteem.

For those not suited to the traditional Leaving Certificate

  • Alternative pathway: LCA is a distinct, self-contained Leaving
Certificate programme designed for those whose needs are not met by the traditional
    Leaving Certificate (Established) programme.

There will be a short presentation and an informal discussion on
Monday night for anyone who would like to find out more.
